What is Sled Team?
Sled Team is an app that helps you manage, visualize, and track your work. It uses Kanban
principles and statistics to help you make progress. You can use it on mobile phones or desktop
computers.
How much does Sled Team cost?
Sled Team has a two-week free trial. After two weeks, it costs $4.99/month, or $39.99/year--33%
off if you choose annual billing.
Can I try it before I sign up?
Yes! We have a free interactive demo, which
includes the ability to fast-forward a day at a time,
so you can see
how Sled Team helps you as time progresses. Note that in our free demo, nothing you enter will
be saved.
What is Kanban?
Kanban is a powerful method for managing work, derived from the system that made Toyota the
dominant auto manufacturer in the world. It involves visualizing work, limiting how much you do
at once, and tracking your past progress as a means of forecasting your future progress.
Why does this look different than the Kanban boards I've seen before?
Traditional Kanban boards are horizontally oriented, with work moving from left to right. This
works really well on physical whiteboards, but doesn't work at all on mobile phones, and isn't
that great on laptops either. We've found that having work flow from bottom to top makes
instinctive sense for our customers.
Is this for individuals, or teams?
Both, and you can even use it for multiple teams! Sled Team is designed to be lightweight enough
for personal work. However, if you invite more people to your board, team features (like
assigning a task to a person) appear automatically. You can also create multiple boards, so more
than one team can get involved.
How is it possible to do automatic forecasting?
We use the methods described by Daniel Vacanti in his books. Briefly stated, whenever your list
of work changes, we run a probabilistic Monte Carlo simulation for all your tasks, based on your
throughput and required confidence level. The higher the confidence you need, the more
conservative the forecast will be. Note that 100% confidence is not possible--that's just not
how the world works. However, if you make sure to follow the advice Sled Team gives you, you
should be able to be confident in your forecasts.
How is forecasting better than estimates?
In a nutshell: estimates are frequently wrong. Not just a little wrong, but a lot wrong. In
software, for example,
it's common for estimates of major work to be wrong by a factor of 5x or more. Human beings
do very poorly at estimating how long things will take, in part because there are many factors
we don't
think about--interruptions, help we need from others, context switching, surprises, revisions,
and so on. The kind of forecasting
we offer is based on your historical data, takes all of those factors into account, and is
therefore much more reliable.
How is Sled Team better than some of the alternatives?
Sled Team can save you significant time compared to our major competitors, and is more powerful
in the ways that really matter.
You can start with zero setup, and get going in seconds. You don't need to create complicated
workflows or statuses. You don't need
to estimate anything. All you need to do is write down your work, break it into small tasks, and
follow the advice Sled Team gives you. That tiny time investiment
will give you enormous insight into your schedule, and help you get more done with less stress.
How can a person be relaxed and effective?
It's easy to be relaxed if you're not doing much. It's easy to be effective if you're working
yourself to death.
But it's hard to be both at the same time — and that's the sweet spot we're all looking
for. Sled
Team helps you get there by giving you a clear,
realistic view of your work. That means you can make achievable commitments, and smart
tradeoffs. When you know what to
expect, and have a plan to get there, you can relax and enjoy the journey.
